  51 driver enables the use of the system's Numeric Processing Extension
  52 coprocessor,
  53 if one is present.  Numeric processing extensions are present in
  54 systems with
  55 .Sy 486DX
  56 CPUs and in systems with
  57 .Sy 387

  60 coprocessors.  The

  62 driver is required for proper system functioning regardless
  63 of whether or not a NPX is present.

  73 You can choose to use a much more fully-featured math emulator (under the
  74 GPL license) by including the option GPL_MATH_EMULATE in your kernel
  75 configuration file instead of the MATH_EMULATE option.

  83 .Sh CAVEATS
  84 The emulator is much slower than the NPX coprocessor.
  85 This will result in poor floating-point math performance
  86 if the emulator must be used.

  88 The non-GPL emulator does not support the whole set of npx
  89 instructions.
  90 It is sufficient for booting and configuring a system, but it cannot
  91 support a system with normal workload unless care is taken to compile
  92 the whole system (including third-party packages) with compiler
  93 options that avoid the use of the non-emulated instructions.
  94 .Sh BUGS
  95 There are lots of them, especially on old cheap motherboards.
  96 In particular, some motherboards do not have the interrupt lines from
  97 the NPX to the CPU wired properly.
  98 If this is the case, the emulator must be used if consistent system
  99 operation is desired.

 101 When using the default MATH_EMULATE option,
 102 transcendental function instructions are not implemented.
 103 Emulation of other instructions is suspect.
