   1 Fontconfig is a library for configuring and customizing font access.

   3 Fontconfig can:
   4 * discover new fonts when installed automatically, removing a common
   5   source of configuration problems.
   6 * perform font name substitution, so that appropriate alternative fonts
   7   can be selected if fonts are missing.
   8 * identify the set of fonts required to completely cover a set of
   9   languages.
  10 * have GUI configuration tools built as it uses an XML-based
  11   configuration file (though with autodiscovery, we believe this need is
  12   minimized).
  13 * efficiently and quickly find the fonts you need among the set of fonts
  14   you have installed, even if you have installed thousands of fonts,
  15   while minimizing memory usage.
  16 * be used in concert with the X Render Extension and FreeType to
  17   implement high quality, anti-aliased and subpixel rendered text on a
  18   display.

  20 Fontconfig does not:
  21 * render the fonts themselves (this is left to FreeType or other
  22   rendering mechanisms).
  23 * depend on the X Window System in any fashion, so that printer only
  24   applications do not have such dependencies.
