   1 Gavl is short for Gmerlin Audio Video Library. It is a low level
   2 library, upon which multimedia APIs can be built. Gavl handles all
   3 the details of audio and video formats like colorspaces, samplerates,
   4 multichannel configurations etc. It provides standardized definitions
   5 for those formats as well as container structures for carrying audio
   6 samples or video images inside an application.

   8 In addition, it handles the sometimes ugly task to convert between
   9 all these formats and provides some elementary operations (copying,
  10 scaling, alpha blending etc)
