  43 The file
  44 .Pa /etc/phones
  45 contains the system-wide
  46 private phone numbers for the
  47 .Xr tip 1
  48 program.  This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
  49 privileged information.  The format of the file is a series of lines
  50 of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>.  The system name is
  51 one of those defined in the
  52 .Xr remote 5
  53 file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of
  54 characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line.
  55 The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
  56 indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
  57 tone (when going through an exchange).  The ``='' is required by the
  58 .Tn DF02-AC
  59 and the ``*'' is required by the
  60 .Tn BIZCOMP
  61 1030.

  63 Only one phone number per line is permitted.  However, if more than
  64 one line in the file contains the same system name

  66 will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
