  36 This report describes the internal structure of
  37 facilities added to the
  38 4.2BSD version of the UNIX operating system for
  39 the VAX,
  40 as modified in the 4.4BSD release.
  41 The system facilities provide
  42 a uniform user interface to networking
  43 within UNIX.  In addition, the implementation
  44 introduces a structure for network communications which may be
  45 used by system implementors in adding new networking
  46 facilities.  The internal structure is not visible
  47 to the user, rather it is intended to aid implementors
  48 of communication protocols and network services by
  49 providing a framework which
  50 promotes code sharing and minimizes implementation effort.

  53 language and system interface, as described in the
  54 \fIBerkeley Software Architecture Manual, 4.4BSD Edition\fP [Joy86].

  61 avoiding, when possible, those portions which are utilized only
  62 by the interprocess communication facilities.
