  36 .I Config
  37 is a tool used in building 4.4BSD system images (the UNIX kernel).
  38 It takes a file describing a system's tunable parameters and
  39 hardware support, and generates a collection
  40 of files which are then used to build a copy of UNIX appropriate
  41 to that configuration.

  43 simplifies system maintenance by isolating system dependencies
  44 in a single, easy to understand, file.

  46 This document describes the content and
  47 format of system configuration
  48 files and the rules which must be followed when creating
  49 these files.  Example configuration files are constructed
  50 and discussed.

  52 Later sections suggest guidelines to be used in modifying
  53 system source and explain some of the inner workings of the
  54 autoconfiguration process.  Appendix D summarizes the rules
  55 used in calculating the most important system data structures
  56 and indicates some inherent system data structure size
  57 limitations (and how to go about modifying them).
