   1 FElt is a free system for introductory level finite element
   2 analysis. It is primarily intended as a teaching tool for introductory
   3 type courses in finite elements - probably in the
   4 mechanical/structural/civil fields. In a command line environment,
   5 FElt uses an intuitive, straightforward input syntax to describe
   6 problems. It also includes a graphical user interface for workstations
   7 that allows the user to set-up, solve and post-process the problem in
   8 a single CAD-like environment.

  10 From the end-user point of view, FElt consists of six programs: felt,
  11 burlap, velvet, corduroy, patchwork, and yardstick. felt is the basic
  12 command-line application; burlap is an interactive Matlab-like
  13 environment for scripting your own elements and analyses; velvet is
  14 the primary GUI interface into the bulk of the functionality in FElt;
  15 corduroy is command-line program for automatic element generation;
  16 patchwork is a command-line application for file format conversion to
  17 and from the FElt syntax; and yardstick is a simple program for
  18 problem scaling and unit conversion.
